You probably know that I am an avid runner, and you probably know that I am passionate about running for charity with Team To End AIDS.
This past June, I had my first DNF (Did Not Finish) of my adult life at my favorite race, the Shadow of the Giants 50K race in the Sierra National Forest. Shortly after I splashed through the Big Sandy creek crossing at mile 10, the pain in my left knee became so bad that I could no longer run. I fought back tears as I realized that I would, that year, miss the sublime experience of running through silent groves of giant sequoias. Limping another four miles back to camp, I had time to reflect on how lucky I am. I have volunteered at the AIDS Project Los Angeles food pantry, handing out bags of groceries ... what those clients wouldn't give to have their biggest problem be having to drop out of a 31-mile trail run!
I'm not going to give up. After some recovery and lots of cross-training this summer, I have started running again and am building my running mileage back up from nothing. I am preparing to make this my best season yet. Here's my race calendar for the next few months:
September 6 - Jet to Jetty 10K for Mental Health, benefiting Airport Marina Counseling Service
October 11 - Skyline to the Sea 50K
November 2 - Greenway 10K, benefiting the L.A. River Greenway project
November 9 - Run For Her 5K, benefiting ovarian cancer research
November 16 - Malibu Canyon 50K
November 27 - XTERRA Topanga Turkey Trot 15K, benefiting Topanga Canyon Docents
January 10 - Avalon Benefit 50 Mile Run (my first 50 miler!!!!!!), benefiting various Catalina Island charities
March 15 - Los Angeles Marathon (run with teammates from Team To End AIDS)
I'll be running the longest race of my life so far, my first 50-miler, in just a few months. I'm terrified, but it's nothing compared with the challenges faced by those living with HIV/AIDS, so I know I can do it.
You don't have to, but I invite you to donate just $5. Not for me. For those living with HIV/AIDS.
Let me hit you with some facts:
Nearly 1.2 million Americans are now living with HIV and 56,000 more will be infected this year. For almost 30 years, APLA has provided food, home health care, and other services to thousands of people whose lives are affected by HIV/AIDS. Many of them are living in poverty and have nowhere to turn.
That’s why I’m asking you to help. Please join me in doing what we can to bring an end to HIV/AIDS. You can donate as little as $5 and or much as you like.
Please donate today by clicking on the button that says, "Donate To Support Shannon!" It's easy! Help me exceed my goal of raising at least $2,000 and make a difference in the life of an APLA client today. Donations are put to use immediately — so please, donate today!
Thank you so much for caring, and thank you for your support.
